Pause. Look Up. Climb.
Recreational Tree Climbing in the Woodland
Borde Hill is home to one of the largest collections of privately owned champion trees in the country. In partnership with Canopy Tree Climbing, we’re inviting visitors of all ages to experience our estate in a unique way that goes far beyond our paths – venturing up into the tree canopy and branches to rediscover a perspective most of us haven’t seen since childhood.
Recreational tree climbing is open to anyone aged 6 plus – children, parents, grandparents, and everyone in between.
What Is Recreational Tree Climbing?
Recreational tree climbing is a truly fascinating, exhilarating and rewarding activity that allows anyone to experience the natural world around them in a completely unique way.
Led by Canopy Tree Climbing’s expert instructors – with over ten years of experience getting people of all walks of life off the ground – sessions involve ascending into the canopy using specialised arborist equipment and techniques. It’s an aerial adventure, an unforgettable way to connect with nature, and a chance to reach heights like never before.
You don’t need to be especially fit or strong. You just need to be willing to stop, look up, and climb. Sessions are for one hour and are suitable for individuals, families, and groups.
Who Is It For?
Borde Hill is a place where nature connects people across generations. Tree climbing does the same.
For families, it’s a rare shared adventure – something that gets children and adults genuinely off the ground and present together. Children aged 6 and over can climb alongside parents, grandparents, and family friends. It is a way to create memorable moments that last a lifetime.
For adults, it’s a chance to do something you probably haven’t done since you were young – and to be surprised by how good it feels. Physically and mentally refreshing, it offers what Borde Hill has always offered: a connection with nature, and a reason to slow down.
For older climbers, you are warmly welcomed. Canopy Tree Climbing has extensive experience supporting climbers of every age and ability, and there is no upper age limit. The canopy is there for everyone who wants it.
A Setting Unlike Any Other
Our trees at Borde Hill are not just a backdrop, they are a living collection – gathered from expeditions to all four corners of the world, planted with passion over more than a century. To climb among them is to engage with our living heritage in the most direct way possible.
After your session, the rest of the day awaits. Wander through the Garden, take lunch at the Summerhouse Cafe or Edie’s Kitchen – where our deep-rooted connection to the land shapes our dishes, or simply find a quiet spot on the lawn and let the afternoon settle around you.
