Home to an extraordinary collection of rare and exotic plants, Borde Hill Garden has been a centre of horticultural excellence for more than 130 years, and our ambitious project, Reinventing Borde Hill, is set to continue this legacy. The project ensures that our internationally significant botanical collection remains protected and nurtured, while unlocking 110 acres of heritage-listed parkland to new and diverse audiences, aligning with our Garden Charity’s mission to preserve, enhance, and educate for future generations.

The Garden Charity – a Historic Commitment to Horticulture

In 1965, Colonel Sir Ralph Stephenson Clarke established Borde Hill Garden as a charity to safeguard its botanical heritage. His vision ensured that this remarkable collection remained in family stewardship, allowing future generations to continue the tradition of collecting and curating rare plant species. Recognising the importance of expanding public benefit, Sir Ralph built upon Borde Hill’s history as a founding member of the National Gardens Scheme in 1927 by establishing the Garden Council (pictured). This advisory body, composed of leading horticultural experts, continues to guide the garden’s conservation and educational efforts.

Borde Hill Garden Charity has modernised its objectives to align with contemporary conservation needs, focusing on protecting and enhancing its rare and diverse collection of plants, trees and shrubs. It is dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice in botany, horticulture, and environmental preservation while promoting sustainable practices to minimise environmental impact. Additionally, the charity and the Reinventing Borde Hill project aims to connect communities with nature to support mental and physical well-being and generate sustainable funding through education, recreation, and commercial activities.
